Vooks: Animated Storybooks for Early Literacy

Browse the Vooks Collection on Kanopy

Kanopy Kids features Vooks content that brings picture books to life through animation, music, and narration. Children can follow along as familiar stories are animated, hear the text read aloud, and engage with the narrative in a format that bridges the gap between print and screen. For libraries, Vooks offers a natural connection to early literacy programming: titles in this collection work well for story time, take-home recommendations for parents and caregivers building pre-reading skills and family literacy. Many Vooks titles are accompanied by supplemental materials that feature activity pages, discussion questions and lesson plans related to different titles. These materials can be downloaded and printed and make for a perfect handout at checkout or handouts in your youth spaces.

Programming Ideas

Kanopy Kids content is flexible enough to support a range of in-library and virtual programs. A few ideas to get you started:

  • Incorporate a Vooks title into your regular story time as a digital read-aloud. End the session with a simple craft or activity tied to the story. Don’t forget, many Vooks titles have supplemental materials that provide plenty of after viewing activities! Access them via the Kanopy platform.
  • Host a short episode screening as part of a family program. All Masha and the Bear titles have Public Performance Rights, meaning you can host screenings for your patrons. At under 10 minutes per episode, Masha and the Bear fits easily into a program block with room for follow-up activities.
  • Masha and the Bear is available in multiple languages making it a natural fit for multilingual community programming. Confirm language availability for your region on the Kanopy platform or check in with your Kanopy account manager.
  • Build a program series around the Hickory Hollow theme. Invite kids to watch an episode, then work through a library scavenger hunt, riddle challenge, or creative writing prompt tied to the episode’s adventure.
  • Use the low-stimulation collection to offer sensory friendly viewing time for neurodiverse children and families who benefit from quieter, calmer programming. Pair with a sensory-friendly setup in your viewing space.
  • Promote Kanopy Kids as a complement to your summer reading program. Because Kanopy Kids titles don’t require tickets, families can watch throughout the summer without worrying about running out of credits.
