School Download Library Fosters Reading Skills with Popular Books
Download eBook and audio book service for K-12 schools to be demonstrated at TCEA
Austin, TX – February 4, 2008 – The newest version of School Download Library (www.overdrive.com/sdl), a download service featuring popular and assigned books for K-12 schools, will be showcased at the Texas Computer Education Association’s 28th Annual Convention & Exposition Feb. 4-8, 2008 (Booth #316). With a core collection of over 600 recreational and curriculum-based eBook and audio book downloads, as well as access to OverDrive’s digital warehouse of over 100,000 popular and best-selling download titles, School Download Library is designed to improve language skills and motivate all readers to read more.
School Download Library is based on a popular download platform used by more than 7,500 public libraries around the globe. The service helps K-12 schools encourage reading by taking advantage of the technology students use everyday. Through a branded website, School Download Library gives students 24/7 online access – for offline use – to audio book and eBook downloads that can enrich vocabulary, support reading comprehension, and create eager readers. Students can take the download titles with them anywhere on compatible mobile devices like MP3 players, Smartphones, and laptop computers.
The School Download Library core collection features hundreds of titles in all subjects, including popular favorites such as “Ella Enchanted,” “The Golden Compass,” and “The Lord of the Rings.” Classic works from Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain and H.G. Wells, as well as study guides and foreign language learning titles, are also included. Most titles are ‘always available’ for simultaneous download, so they do not require holds or waitlists. Digital eBooks and audio books are never damaged like a print book, and the loan expires automatically, meaning no late fees.
“Our research shows that education professionals see a dearth of popular titles in their libraries and classrooms as a major barrier to reading,” said David Burleigh, director of marketing for OverDrive. “School Download library helps all student readers – gifted, reluctant, and ESL – engage with the titles they want using the technology they love.”
OverDrive (www.overdrive.com) powers download media catalogs at thousands of libraries, including
institutions in New York City, Singapore, Boston, and Toronto. The company also provides digital download distribution for hundreds of publishers like HarperCollins and Harlequin, delivers e-retail solutions to hundreds of college bookstores and other online retailers, and is a strategic partner to Microsoft, Adobe Systems, Inc., Mobipocket, and other leading technology firms.
School Download Library demonstrations will take place throughout TCEA’s Convention and Exposition at OverDrive’s School Download Library booth (#316). Educators can sign up for a free trial of School Download Library, as well as enter a drawing to win an MP3 player.
