By Popular Demand, Kanopy to Offer New Subscription Bundle Options for Academic and Public Libraries
SAN FRANCISCO – January 24, 2022 – Kanopy, the leader in streaming video for libraries, is offering another streaming package for their end-users: Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD). The forthcoming subscription bundles, developed alongside partner libraries and with participation from key content suppliers, will allow libraries to offer diverse fixed-budget collections to students, professors, and patrons in addition to the current models offered through Kanopy. Presented natively through Kanopy’s secure platform, the new subscriptions will provide a superior, seamless experience for all end-users. These new bundles will further the company’s mission of democratizing access to the highest-quality collection of films that inspire, educate, and entertain.
Academic libraries will find the new subscription model complements Kanopy’s established licensing options. “SVOD will likely be a popular pillar for many libraries’ strategic acquisition strategy, on top of Kanopy’s current Patron-Driven Acquisition, perpetual, and firm ordering options,” said Jason Tyrrell, General Manager of Kanopy. “Many premium, critical titles for learning and engagement are only available through transactional models. By working alongside our partners to add a robust subscription option into the service, Kanopy can ensure institutions of any size can provide a base layer of critical video resources, customized specifically for faculty, staff, and student’s curricular needs.”
Public libraries will see Kanopy’s SVOD packages categorized by patrons’ core areas of interest along with predictable levels of spending, while offering a stable and refreshing assortment of titles that will appeal to all audiences. Available in addition to the current pay-per-use (PPU) option, subscriptions will be another on-demand resource available to patrons using their library card. “As many librarians have strongly indicated a preference for a subscription option, we’re confident Kanopy’s genre-based packages will be popular with librarians and the patrons they serve,” Tyrrell added.
Kanopy will provide more information on its forthcoming subscription video on demand (SVOD) offerings in its Q1 Town Hall to be held in March, with event details to follow in the coming weeks. Library partners can log their interest in the SVOD model with their account representative as the anticipated launch approaches before the end of 2022.
