Science fiction is a great genre for a lot of reasons. The tech is often very cool and offers, we hope, a peek into the future. (Where is my flying car already?!) It also gives authors a chance to comment on the world as it is, but in a setting just different enough that they can sometimes make a point that in contemporary fiction might come across as preaching or clunky. Also, different worlds from ours are fascinating to dream about and get lost in.

Readers have always known this about sci-fi, and it’s all even more true about sci-fi sagas that allow the reader to really sink in and live in an exciting world of what-ifs for a good long while. Hollywood is also getting in on the act, adaptations of sci-fi sagas one of the hottest genres out there. The biggest movie this spring is Dune: Part Two, and TV seems to be gobbling up sci-fi properties as fast as they can. (The news that Tad Williams’s Otherland series is currently being developed for TV by the folks behind The Witcher and Wheel of Time has me excited beyond words.) To that end, libraries are going to want to make sure they have all the best and hottest sci-fi sagas available. Below are a few you will want on your radar, regardless of film and TV adaptation status.
