Best Page-to-Screen Picks in OverDrive’s End of Year Sale

Wicked by Gregory Maguire

Buy the audiobook on sale here

The source material for the Broadway musical that inspired the hit movie now in theaters, Maguire’s book tells the story of Elphaba, a green-skinned girl who grew up in Oz and went on to become the infamous Wicked Witch of the West.

As someone who made Wicked — the book series and musical — her entire personality for most of her twenties, I should note the book has more mature themes than its stage and screen adaptations. So while L. Frank Baum’s original Oz books were child-friendly, Wicked is not. But it is great for adult readers looking for the story behind their new favorite movie musical.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien, narrated by Andy Serkis

It’s no Die Hard, but in our household the extended version of the Lord of the Rings trilogy is considered a Christmas movie. Or at least a New Years movie, as my spouse and I have spent several New Years Eves having a movie marathon of the trilogy.

For those who love Tolkien’s classic fantasy series but wish the story had just a little bit more Gollum, they can now listen to the audiobooks narrated by actor Andy Serkis – all on sale in our End of Year sale!

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

Last year Disney+ brought viewers the television show Percy Jackson & the Olympians. Based on the incredibly popular book series that starts with The Lightning Thief, the series follows Percy Jackson, a twelve-year-old boy who learns he is the son of a Greek god. As if being a middle schooler wasn’t difficult enough.

The second season of the show is expected to premiere in 2025. It will be based on the second book, The Sea of Monsters, which is also on sale. In fact, all five of the original Percy Jackson series ebooks are included in our End of Year sale, so stock up!

Shōgun, Part I by James Clavell

Set in feudal Japan, Shōgun follows Englishman John Blackthorne who is thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan. He must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss, and he is torn between two worlds that will each be forever changed.

The Hulu adaptation of Clavell’s novel features a mostly Japanese cast and was the first Japanese-language series to win an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series.

The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han

Han’s novel and series is a coming-of-age love story between Belly and the two boys she has grown up with her entire life. Who doesn’t love a love triangle? The Amazon Prime adaptation premiered in 2022 and the third season is expected to be released sometime next year.

The second and third books in the trilogy are also on sale as audiobooks in our End of Year sale so grab some extra copies now.

Wool by Hugh Howey

The second season of AppleTV’s Silo started a couple weeks ago, making now a great time to add Hugh Howey’s Wool, the first book in the series that the show is adapted from. In this dystopian world, the remnants of humanity live underground in a single silo because the world outside has grown toxic — or has it? After the previous sheriff leaves the silo in a terrifying ritual, Juliette, a mechanic from the down deep, is suddenly and inexplicably promoted to the head of law enforcement and uncovers hints of a sinister conspiracy.

The audiobook of Shift, the second book in the series, is also on sale!
