Acclaimed Short Film, Produced by Kanopy, Premieres Worldwide via Public Library & Academic Access Platforms

CLEVELAND — February 25, 2026  — Kanopy, the ad-free, subscription-free global streaming platform available through public and academic libraries, today announced that its critically anticipated short film, “How To Shoot a Ghost,” directed by Oscar-winner Charlie Kaufman, will begin streaming on its platform March 1, 2026. The film was produced by Isabelle Deluce and Emily McCann Lesser with Kanopy serving as executive producer and institutional distributor. This year’s Academy Award Best Actress nominee Jessie Buckley stars alongside Josef Akiki.

“How To Shoot A Ghost” will debut on Kanopy, furthering the platform’s mission to expand access to bold, original work from leading voices in cinema. The release strengthens Kanopy’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that libraries, universities, and cinephile communities around the world can discover and engage with innovative independent cinema.

Synopsis: Two newly dead young people meet in the streets of Athens, amid the pulsing cityscape and the ghosts of history. One a translator, the other a photographer, they were outsiders in life; in death they struggle with the residue of their longings and mistakes. They wander the city together, finding consolation in the difficult beauty of existence and its aftermath.

The script is written by poet Eva H.D., who previously collaborated with Kaufman on the short film “Jackals & Fireflies.” Cinematography is by Michał Dymek, recipient of the Golden Frog at Camerimage for “The Girl with the Needle.” Executive producers include Halsey, Avan Jogia, Anthony Li, Afroditi Panagiotakou, Andrew Ostapchenko, Elli Papadiamanti, Fil Ieropoulos, Foivos Dousos, Franklin P. LaViola, Jason Chayse Tyrrell, John Henry Hinkel, Kyle Mann, Matt Hartley, Nathan Mardis, Nicholas LaViola and Simos Manganis, with Zola Elgart Glassman and Jared Ian Goldman as co-executive producers and Daniel Lugo as co-producer. Rufus & Martha Wainwright have recorded a new cover of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day” for the film.

Charlie Kaufman is the writer of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Being John Malkovich,” and “Adaptation.” He is the writer/director of “Synecdoche, New York”; “I’m Thinking of Ending Things”; and “Anomalisa.” Previously Nominated for four Academy Awards, he won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”

Kanopy partnered with the film’s creative team during post-production, serving as both a producer and distributor to ensure that this unique work of art reaches public library cardholders and university communities around the world. “How To Shoot A Ghost” will stream globally on Kanopy, available to viewers through participating public libraries and academic institutions across supported devices. The film will debut on The Criterion Channel the same day.
