Discover your new favorite fall picks with OD librarians
Thanks to all who joined us for our Fall Picks from OverDrive Librarians Webinar! While it admittedly felt strange to consider cozy fall reading during these hot summer days, we’re so excited for the amazing titles coming out this fall!
Shelia, Sarah, Kristin, Holly and I featured picks from small presses and titles that feature analog living. We also selected adult titles from the trending fiction genres of horror, fantasy, romance, and myth / fairy tale retellings. Given the quality of the season’s releases, narrowing down our options felt impossible, so we included a lightning round of bonus picks!

Small Presses
Eisen by Guzel Yakhina
Eisen is a magnificent fictional account of the early Russian film director, Sergei Eisenstein. It covers his career and groundbreaking editing style, his relationships with his mother and various women, and his struggles under Stalin’s censorship regime. It is written by Guzel Yakhina, and translated expertly by Polly Gannon.

Moving to the small, disconnected English island Hasenhurst sounds like a dream to Jessica, who can admit that while her marriage to Greg is on the rocks, there’s still time to repair and build connection with her teenage child, Sandy. The family adjusts to the customs of their new community and learns about its whimsical lore, but there’s an undeniable sinister undertone to the local legends. Maybe this is not a place for this family to start anew after all?

Shop the Silk and Sensibility audiobook
Silk and Sensibility by debut author Mengxi Seeley is exactly what you think—a retelling of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. What’s different is that the action has been moved to 16th Century Ming Dynasty China!
Myth / Fairy Tale Retellings
This Knight Topples Empires by Ry Herman

Shop the This Knight Topples Empires audiobook
This Knight Topples Empires follows Jules, one of six siblings, all blessed (or cursed?) with unique magical gifts. When a neighboring Kingdom begins to build a threatening army, Jules pretends to be a man, enlisting as a knight and acting as a double agent. While this novel draws inspiration from a wide base of research, it’s most closely inspired by the Romanian fairy tale Ileana Symziana or Ileana the Golden and is great pick for readers who like zany shenanigans in their fantasy and protagonists who challenge traditional expectations of gender and heroism.
