The Key to Lifelong Learning: Why Book Access Matters

“Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.” – Socrates

Education and learning are core aspects of our humanity, our ability to communicate complex thoughts to one another often astounding, our cognitive potential nearly limitless. If, as Socrates said, education is the kindling of a flame, then books are the match. To light a fire without matches is not impossible but poses a much greater challenge, to navigate life without this guiding light is a daunting task.

From the earliest picture books to engaging novels, reading shapes the way young minds grow, learn, and explore the world. However, research conducted over the years has found that these learning opportunities are not equitably distributed. For many, especially those in underserved communities, a lack of reading materials can create barriers to literacy, academic achievement, and a lifelong love of learning.

The Impact of Book Access on Young Readers

Research shows that access to books is one of the strongest predictors of academic success. When children grow up surrounded by books, they develop stronger literacy skills, better comprehension, and a greater ability to think critically. Unfortunately, many communities across the country face “book deserts,” where children have limited or no access to age-appropriate reading materials.

A 2022 study published in the Journal of Multidisciplinary Graduate Research found that 54% of student participants expressed a desire to read more if they had greater access to books, highlighting the critical role that access to reading materials plays in fostering reading habits and, consequently, academic achievement

That being said, a study by Room to Read revealed that over 60% of low-income families in the U.S. have no books at all in their homes for children. Additionally, a 2024 policy brief by the National Book Access Association highlighted that in some high-poverty areas, there is only one book available for every 833 children. This lack of access can slow language development, hinder academic progress, and reduce engagement with reading altogether.

Libraries have long played a vital role in breaking down these barriers and ensuring that every child can discover the joy of reading, and with continued support and advocacy by community members and elected officials, they will continue to for years to come.

How Libraries Bridge the Gap

Public and school libraries serve as invaluable resources for young readers, offering books that inspire, educate, and entertain. However, with increasing demand and budget constraints, it can be challenging to provide consistent access to the right books at the right time. Digital solutions like Libby and Sora have become an essential way to expand library collections and reach more readers where they are—at home, in the classroom, or on the go.

A 2024 study conducted in Baltimore County, Maryland, found that 92% of children reported increased access to books due to Little Free Libraries, and nearly half reported reading more frequently since they began using them, demonstrating the impact that accessible book programs can have on reading engagement.
