This week, more than one billion people worldwide will celebrate the Lunar New Year, closing out the Year of the Dragon and ushering in the Year of the Snake with festive fireworks, food, and – as always – the lucky color red.

With the start of the next Lunar New Year also comes the kick-off of our 2025 World Literary Tour, which, in its first stops, will examine the evolving landscape of Chinese literature through the lenses of the iconic cities of Hong Kong and Chengdu, China.

  • In Hong Kong (home to authors like Xi Xi, Jin Yong and Amy Cheung), readers will appreciate a deep literary tradition that seamlessly blends Eastern and Western cultures, including local literature from publishers like Hong Kong University Press and Sino United Electronic Publishing Limited.
  • Chengdu enjoys a rich literary heritage as the birthplace of famous Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu, along with premier publishers like Sichuan Tiandi and Sichiuan Children’s Publishing House. Learn about the city’s laid-back lifestyle, including its traditional teahouses and fiery cuisine!

If you have a large population of Chinese-speaking students (or Chinese language learners) it’s also a great time to add digital content to meet their reading needs. This month’s World Literary Tour stop includes the Lunar New Year Sale, which runs through Feb. 28 and features thousands of discounted ebooks and audiobooks, including 2024 bestsellers, books about Chinese culture and cuisine, top picks for K-12 schools and more, in both Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
