Canada-wide Digital Book Club Explores Topics of Youth and Digital Privacy
Public library patrons can read and discuss Canadian author’s coming-of-age “All I Ask” ebook or audiobook for free
TORONTO – August 11, 2021 – Nearly 2,000 public libraries and thousands of readers across Canada are participating in the latest Together We Read: Canada digital book club selection. From August 11-25, public library patrons can enjoy award-winning Canadian author Eva Crocker’s debut adult novel, All I Ask, as an ebook and audiobook for free. Readers can access the digital book with no waitlists or holds by downloading the Libby app. They can also participate in an online discussion with other readers across the country.
The Together We Read: Canada digital book club connects readers through Canadian public libraries with the same ebook for two weeks and only requires a valid library card to get started. This free program is facilitated by OverDrive, the leading digital reading platform for ebooks, audiobooks and magazines and creator of the top-rated Libby app.
“All I Ask is a fictionalized account of the aftermath of a personal incident,” said author Eva Crocker. “I wanted to look at the difference between having agency over how much of yourself you reveal to people and what it feels like to have that agency taken away, as well as how much of ourselves is really captured in our digital mirror image.”
In All I Ask, Stacey wakes to the police pounding on her door. They search her home and seize her computer and her phone, telling her they’re looking for “illegal digital material.” Left to unravel what’s happened, Stacey must find a way to take back the privacy and freedom she feels she has lost. Smart and tough and almost terrifyingly open, Stacey and her circle of friends are uncommonly free of biases and boundaries, but this incident reveals how they are still susceptible to society’s traps. Navigating her way through friendship and love, Stacey strives to restore her self-confidence and to actualize the most authentic way to live her life — one that acknowledges both her power and her vulnerability, her joy and her fear.
All I Ask is published by Canada’s House of Anansi Press and can be borrowed from participating libraries in Canada during Together We Read between August 11-25. The ebook and audiobook can be read on all major computers and devices, including Kobo® tablets and eReaders, iPhone®, iPad®, Android™ phones and tablets and Chromebook™ without waitlists or holds. The title will automatically expire at the end of the lending period, and there are no late fees. Download Libby to get started.
