Canada “Sora Starter” collection includes high-interest, always-available titles from Canadian publishers ECW Press, House of Anansi, Dundurn Press and more at no cost

TORONTO – October 20, 2022 – To help Canadian schools meet demand for digital content without increasing budget, OverDrive Education has donated 100 juvenile and young adult titles to thousands of primary and secondary schools around the country. This Canada “Sora Starter bundle is available to all Canadian schools and includes high-interest English and French ebooks and audiobooks in a variety of subjects from Canadian authors and publishers. Sora is the leading student reading app for 6,000 Canadian schools and more than 55,000 schools worldwide.

Titles in this free collection – along with the original Sora Starter collection which features 200+ juvenile and young adult titles – are always available with no waiting for students to borrow and read. Educators can use both digital book collections to encourage community engagement with young readers through book clubs, classroom discussions and more. Canada Sora Starter titles expand schools’ individual digital collections, add more simultaneous-use content from indigenous authors, remove barriers and provide access to more age-appropriate resources for literacy 24/7 anytime, anywhere.

All titles in the Canada Sora Starter collection are written by Canadian authors including Jigging for Halibut with Tsini, Safe Harbour, Mustafa, This Book Betrays My Brother and L’alimentation et les traditions canadiennes (Canadian Food and Traditions). Ebooks, audiobooks and Read-Alongs in this collection come from Canadian publishers Beech Street Books, Cormorant Books, Dundurn Press, ECW Press, House of Anansi Press and Portage & Main Press. More information about the titles.

“The Canada Sora Starter is valuable for our digital collection as it gives voice to the talents and vast experiences of Canadians from the past and present,” said Andrea Sisca, Curriculum Leadership and Innovation at Toronto Catholic District School Board. “Reading Canadian works by diverse authors gives us a sense of how we see ourselves as Canadians, as a nation, and our unique place in the world.”

These titles available now through September 30, 2023 in Canadian schools that use the Sora reading app. Schools not yet using Sora can try it for free and receive both collections at no additional cost. As part of OverDrive’s Everyone Reads program, new titles in a variety of subjects will be added for free into schools’ collections in the coming months.
