OverDrive is thrilled to announce that our Sora student reading app has been selected as one of TIME’s Best Inventions in the Education category for 2019!

To assemble the 2019 TIME Best Inventions list, TIME solicited nominations across a range of categories from editors and correspondents worldwide, as well as through an online application process. Each contender was then evaluated on key factors, including originality, effectiveness, ambition and influence. The result: 100 groundbreaking inventions that are changing the way we live, work, play and think about what’s possible.

Being named to the TIME list is in many ways the culmination of an incredible year of growth for Sora, which is now available to more than 23,000 schools in the U.S. and has been responsible for millions of ebook and audiobook checkouts from both school and public libraries since 2018. The honor affirms Sora’s essential role in encouraging students to read more by choice, using the technology they know best.

It also marks the 2nd year in a row for OverDrive to be honored in this way: Libby was named to the 2018 list.

TIME cites several key factors that set Sora apart, including the app’s multilingual features, shareable notes and highlights, and real-time reading stats tracking that work in concert to make reading more accessible and enjoyable to students of all reading levels and abilities. Furthermore, Sora offers students game-changing in-app access to their local public library’s digital collection in addition to their school’s collection, instantly expanding their age-appropriate reading options.
